Change and Mental Health
with Jordan Stephens

Jordan Stephens, 28, has already had an exciting and diverse career. Born in Brighton, he formed hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks in 2008 - they have sold over one million singles and over 600,000 albums in the UK. He is also a famous actor, known for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Last Vegas (2013) and Why Him? (2016). More recently he has created #IAMWHOLE, an anti-stigma mental health initiative developed in partnership with the NHS and YMCA.

This special Q&A session hosted by Sunny Winter (promoter, tour manager and Assistant Manager at Kobalts, looking after clients like Arcade Fire) will cover Jordan's career, demonstrating how having diverse income streams can create a sustainable career. It will also include his work in promoting mental health. The session will cover:

  • Aspirations and inspirations.

  • Music career.

  • Acting career.

  • Mental health and foundation of I Am Whole.

  • Diversity in the music and film industries.

  • Thoughts on the future for music and acting.

Panel investigating at change and diversity in the UK music industry. Find out about where the music industry is going and how it can become more diverse. Hosted by Ammo Talwar (UK Music Diversity Task Force/Punch Records) with Alexandra Ampofo (Live Nation/Women Connect), Maxie Gedge (PRS Women Make Music/Keychange), Nadine Lee (LCCM) and Patrycja Rozbicka (Aston University and Birmingham Live Music Project).

This panel will offer insight on several topical issues relating to the UK music industry:

  • Change inflicted by the pandemic and how long-lasting this will be.

  • Change brought about by technology and the digital consumption of music with the growth of platforms like YouTube.

  • Diversity among music artists/producers/DJs and genres.

  • Diversity at festivals in terms of line-up and organisation.

  • Diversity in the support music industry, from labels and distribution to management and events.

  • Suggested solutions for the future.

Studio Sound Masterclass: Tarek Musa

Tarek Musa is a songwriter, producer and mixer based in Liverpool, UK. From teenage years spent skateboarding with The 1975 to international success with his band Spring King, Tarek Musa gives us the inside track on his favourite gear, why he loves the studio and how imposing creative limitations can give your music the edge. He has worked with some of the UK’s most exciting artists including Circa Waves, The Big Moon, Gengahr, Avalanche Party and Kagoule.

Tarek will host a studio sound masterclass looking at his studio, working practices, recording, mixing and mastering.

Creative Masterclass:
Digital & Nurve/Demon

Stephen Carr a.k.a. Digital is a well-respected and inspirational D&B producer with a career spanning 20 years and a seminal catalogue of original and innovative releases. His signature bass-lines and radicalised dubbed out sounds reach back to his childhood seeing his father run his own sound-system for nearly thirty years in Ipswich. The session will be hosted by dubstep/grime producer Nurve/Demon (Raff de Renzo) now of Education & Bass - students are able to get FREE access to Education & Bass' online resources and tutorials here.

This live session is a creative masterclass in production and creating tracks, focusing on some of the studio techniques, tips and tricks used by these producers in their careers. It will also explore their career journeys.

Creative Futures:
Role of the Entrepreneur Panel

Panel exploring the future of entrepreneurship led by Carol Ann Whitehead FRSA (The Zebra Partnership and Diversity Director for Industry Week) to coincide with Global Entrepreneurship Week. Features Jacqueline Winstanley founder and CEO Universal Inclusion and The Inclusive Entrepreneur; James Holt, a deaf musician (James Holt Music), Mark Esho (multi award-winning disabled entrepreneur), Aaron Hornback, an entrepreneur running Horizon, a health and wellbeing network, Grant Logan (Ability Today and Academy for Disabled Journalists) and a rep from Creative Entrepreneurs.

The future is going to be more entrepreneurial. More of us will work as self-employed, often in portfolio careers. The future economy will need creativity and innovation in terms of business ideas and start-ups. Enterprise also needs to become more diverse, encouraging those from under-represented groups to become entrepreneurial. This panel will explore the future of enterprise and help you understand how you can be part of that.

Creating a Virtual Festival - Lost Horizons: CONTINENTAL DRIFTS

TUESDAY 17th NOVEMBER 6pm - go to the Stream Room

In July 2020, Lost Horizons (Glastonbury) ran as a virtual festival hosted in Sansar. Festival goers could wander around the site exploring interactive content and stages, just like at a real event. The event proved extremely popular with numerous performances from DJs and acts. Chris Macmeikan MBE, Music Director, and Sam Speight, don of all things VR, from festival veterans Continental Drifts, take you on a journey of how the festival went online.

The music festival is one of the most immersive real experiences there is. Can you create a festival experience virtually? Is this something that is temporary, or is it here to stay? This session will explore all this and more, including a retrospective of Continental Drifts role in providing content for festivals over several decades.

Future of Creativity
Drew Rolands: IVE

IVE is a progressive training company that places human creativity at the heart of business productivity and innovation. Drew Rolands is a creativity specialist. He has held senior leadership roles for the past 30 years, all of which have been underpinned by his expert knowledge of leadership, creativity and creative practice. Drew sits on Leeds Chamber of Commerce Leadership Group; is Chair of Education on the board of Shakespeare North.

This live stream will explore the nature of creativity and its role in the future. Participants will come to understand what creativity actually is, and what it isn’t, how creativity leads to innovation and they will explore some of the behaviours needed in order to create an innovation climate. It will cover areas such as:

From Studio to Stage: Aja

THURSDAY 19th NOVEMBER 7pm - go to the Stream Room

AJA is a singer/song writer/DJ and visual artist. Using unsettling noise, distressed screams, hand-made electronics and found objects pushed through pedals, AJA's industrial beats and distorted drone are combined with an intense performance. She has worked for Berlin Alternative Fashion Week and within the LGBTQ+ community promoting and increasing the presence of women in electronic music.

Her session will cover interpreting and creating sounds and working as an live performance artist using Ableton. It will start with the composition and production process and explore how this can be translated successfully into a performance context.

A Journey into Songwriting: Shlomo

ON DEMAND

Simon Shlomo Kahn, or Shlomo, burst into the mainstream collaborating with Björk and performing with famous fans from Damon Albarn, Lily Allen and Jarvis Cocker to Imogen Heap, Martha Wainwright and Rudimental. As the first ever World Looping Champion, he taught his friend Ed Sheeran some tricks. He has played the main stages at Glastonbury more times than he remembers, won rave reviews for his autobiographical one-man shows and even had a feature film made about him.

This exclusive feature looks at the creative career journey and how career aims can change over time. Shlomo will explore:

  • His early career as a major beatboxer and producer, collaborating with major artists.

  • His transition to becoming a songwriter.

  • How change and transition can affect mental health.

  • Diversity in the music industry.

Making Money from Music Panel

Panel exploring how musicians can make money in a world affected by Covid and digital content. Led by Crispin Hunt, multi-platinum selling songwriter and record producer who has worked with or for Jake Bugg, Florence and The Machine, Lana Del Ray, Ellie Goulding, Maverick Sabre, Newton Faulkner, Natalie Imbruglia, Bat For Lashes (Ivors Academy). He will be in discussion with former Gomez frontman Tom Gray who has set up Broken Record to highlight the crisis in pay for musicians. The session is hosted by Sunny Winter.

This panel features two of the leading champions for fair pay for musicians in the UK. Tom Gray, via his Broken Record initiative, has been instrumental in getting the DCMS to set up an enquiry into rates for musicians. The panel will cover:

  • Impact of pandemic on music artist income

  • The historical issue of artist pay.

  • Income for artists from official streams and the current cuts for labels.

  • Income for artists from other digital platforms, such as YouTube.

  • Income for artists from event promoters and how this is changing.

Creativity, Innovation, Collaboration and Sustainability:
Kevin Saunderson & Neil Rushton

A must for dance and techno producers! Kevin Saunderson is a platinum-selling recording artist, label boss, festival promoter - a true innovator in the pantheon of popular music, a cultural champion and cracking DJ. Saunderson, with Juan Atkins and Derrick May (often called 'the Belleville Three'), are considered to be the originators of techno, specifically Detroit techno.

Interviewing him will be Neil Rushton who started as a promoter of Northern Soul nights. He set up Kool Kat Records in the 1980s, a pioneering UK techno label which developed a strong relationship with these techno pioneers.

Drum Recording Masterclass: Lee Gretton

Lee Gretton is a composer, music producer and the founder of In Production Music, a UK based team of composers, producers and musicians who provide high end music and audio services to a wide range of media clients, major record labels and music publishers. Lee's music has amassed hundreds of broadcast credits with notable spots including top ten Netflix shows (Money Heist, Story Bots) as well as AAA global best selling computer games (Ubisoft: The Crew 2, Just Dance). IPM is a regular provider of music to Universal, EMI, BMG, BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Disney and provides audio post production services with credits including documentaries with Sir David Attenborough and Sir Ian McKellan.

In this video tutorial, Lee will be discussing the tools and techniques he uses to create release-ready drum kit recordings, something that can be a bit of a headache, particularly when working with tight music production budgets. The session covers his approach to drum kit recording practices, editing, drum kit mix techniques and drum triggering.

Expect the Unexpected - Career Change: Louis Osbourne

Creative Futures:
The 360 Degree Artist with Don't Try

This session will focus on the importance of branding and digital marketing for the modern music artist. Don’t Try is a music management and label based in London. Simon Wilson and Ben Ward have over 15 years industry experience, working with acts such as Sigur Ros, The Hunna, Band of Skulls, Charlie Simpson, Zola Jesus, Roosevelt, Coasts, Kiesza, SuperGlu and many more. They represent Grammy-Award Winning producers such as Adrian Bushby and collaborate with breaking artists including Bessie Turner, Calva Louise and Strange Bones.

Cassell the Beatmaker

Not only has Cassell The Beatmaker won the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for song writing with Plan B, he’s also a professionally recognised, world-renowned drummer.

Cassell works as a producer, songwriter and drummer. His musical career has lead him to work with an impressive list of new and established artists including The Streets, Rizzle Kicks, Akala, Duffy and Jeff Beck.

Making Money from Music with Bandcamp

Bandcamp believe that music is an indispensable part of culture, and for that culture to thrive, artists - no matter the size of their audience - must be compensated fairly and transparently for their work. Aly Gillani is the European Label Rep for Bandcamp. Aly is also the founder of Worldwide Awards Label of the Year, First Word Records, home to Children Of Zeus, Tall Black Guy, Eric Lau, Kaidi Tatham, Tawiah and many more. Originally a club promoter he ran seminal club nights Funky Mule and New Bohemia in his adopted city of Leeds for many years. Creative Futures:
Making Money from Music with Sentric

Sentric Music formed in 2006 as the new age independent music publisher. Sentric disrupted traditional publishing by offering the fairest deal in the industry. They empower artists and songwriters to collect the royalties they’re owed. This specially-recorded session is presented by James Cherry of Sentric.

It will provide an overview of music publishing, exploring artist royalties and how these can be collected by publishing companies.

Hosted by Carol Ann Whitehead FRSA, also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (The Zebra Partnership and Diversity Director for Industry Week) to coincide with Global Entrepreneurship Week. They will discuss the launch of the Inclusive Entrepreneur Network, the involvement of Manchester events and media students in the conference during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2019 and Jacqueline's passion for 'Opening up the Creative Space' and plans going forward.

Art of Leadership: Gillian Davies

Reshape Music for Disabled Musicians

Reshape Music is a report exploring the lived experience of Disabled musicians in education and beyond. Developed with the Take it Away Consortium, a group of leading music charities, the report includes the first-ever national survey into Disabled people’s experiences of music education and music-making.

The upheaval of 2020 provides an opportunity for music education, retail and the wider industries to build inclusivity into the recovery. Reshape Music sets out the urgent need for educators, retailers, and the music industry to improve access and choice for disabled musicians, to increase representation of Disabled people in the paid workforce, and to up-skill music teachers to better support Disabled musicians.

The Ultimate Seminar

EVENT - SATURDAY 21st & SUNDAY 22nd NOVEMBER

Students can register for FREE to the Ultimate Seminar, running 21st and 22nd November run by Cre8ting Vision. The event aim is to educate and encourage today’s generation to become tomorrow’s leaders in their chosen field. It will inspire and enable students to learn valuable business skills, to gain insight into their chosen field and benefit from networking opportunities. Established music professionals lead each panel and share inspirational experiences, encouraging individuals to set personal goals and realise their own objectives and ambitions.

Creative Futures:
Climate. Sound. Change.

PRACTICAL ACTIVITY: DEADLINE 15th NOVEMBER

Climate. Sound. Change is a project run by Sound and Music and the British Music Collection, which is offering a £500 grant for a music artist aged 16-21 to create a new work that responds to the climate emergency.

This track can be created either alone (solo) or with collaborators of your choice (this could be another composer / musician / visual artist / filmmaker/ animator/ writer etc.)

The brief is for a 1-5 minute piece responding to climate change - this could be audio, video or novel/collaborative approaches to scoring and sharing work.

Successful applicants will need to demonstrate an awareness of the environmental impact of their own work. The selected works will be launched and hosted on the British Music Collection online, shared via social channels and newsletters.

The deadline for entries is Sunday 15th November. The winner will receive a grant of £500 which they may use to help them with their music making.

Make Music with Code

EVENT - THURSDAY 12th NOVEMBER 6-8pm

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of using code to create musical tracks using the TidalCycles coding language.

Participants won't need to have any experience with using code and will be guided through the process. In the session we will learn how to programme basic drum beats and synthesiser patterns. We will learn how to add effects and warp these patterns to make exciting new sounds, and see how the computer can become a powerful way to make music.

You will need access to a laptop and an internet connection. This workshop is online and pay as you feel but booking is required via Eventbrite. suggested donation £5.

BIY People & Talent Careers Sessions

These sessions are brought to you via our partner UK Music and BIY People. The sessions will allow you to hear expert advice on how best to present yourselves when looking for employment as well as how best to utilise your time. The sessions are interactive and you will get the opportunity to ask questions and engage with BIY who have fantastic connections in the world of job-seeking in the music industry.

BBC Introducing Live

EVENT - CATCH UP

BBC Music Introducing LIVE ran from 24th October to 31st October 2020, but you can catch up on what happened. BBC Music Introducing LIVE is one of the UK’s biggest, fastest-growing and most exciting music industry events, supporting and inspiring the next generation of industry leaders, artists and creatives.

The event kicked off with each of the 36 local Introducing radio shows broadcasting a 30 minute Masterclass. Guests include Jack Garratt, Jamz Supernova, Pete Tong, Pendulum, Georgia and Connie Constance plus many more. There were also Spotlight Sessions from the most exciting artist in each area across the UK.

There were five Headline Panels offering expert advice on around topics including Powerful Women in the Music Industry, LGBTQ+ Artists Sparking a Revolution and How to Survive Financially in the Music Industry.

Brighton Music Conference

The Brighton Music Conference (BMC) focuses on innovation, education and the key issues facing the electronic dance music sector. This year was an online event featuring contributions and keynotes from the likes of Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox and Faithless. Last Night A DJ Saved My Life - Set for Love

PRACTICAL PROJECT - 20-22nd NOVEMBER

Set For Love was created to enable DJs, artists and promoters to raise funds in support of children in crisis. All door receipts and other donations raised on the night are donated to a LNADJ campaign of the host’s choosing. The inspiration and original concept came from George Evelyn, aka Nightmares On Wax.

  • Each centre creates DJ team(s) to create a set and crowd fund it for charity.

  • Sets are live streamed 20th-22nd November as part of the international event.

  • Industry Week can used to finalise sets and funding in preparation for the event.

  • Project fits with citizenship and diversity agendas.

The Higher Frequency: Youth Music

The Higher Frequency is a brand new, original Youth Music podcast, produced and presented by the next generation of creators across the UK. The Higher Frequency, delves into the social and political issues behind the music they love. Series one explores their voice and views on music, society and culture, featuring special guests GIRLI; Zoka the Author; [K S R]; Lavz; Estee Blu; Nadia Khan and more.

The Higher Frequency is a Youth Music podcast in partnership with Notion. This is a Boldface production led by Femi Oriogun-Willams.

UK Music Diversity Report 2020

UK Music has revealed the findings of its 2020 Workforce Diversity Survey in its UK Music Diversity Report 2020.

Among the key findings of the 2020 Music Industry Workforce Diversity Survey are:

  • Representation of Black, Asian and other ethnic minorities among those aged 16-24 in the music industry stands at record 30.6% - up from 25.9% in 2018.

  • Proportion of women increases from 45.3% in 2016 to new high of 49.6% in 2020.

  • Number of people from Black, Asian and other ethnic minority communities at entry-level rises from 23.2% in 2018 to new high of 34.6% in 2020.

  • Number of women in the 45-64 age group drops from 38.7% in 2018 to 35% in 2020.

  • Representation of Black, Asian and other ethnic minorities at senior executive levels rises from 17.9% in 2018 to new high of 19.9% - but that means they fill just one in five senior posts.
